The Key to Learning to Play by Ear: Listening

Scott Goldbaum

Guitar

Learning to play the guitar by ear is a skill that can elevate your musical journey to new heights. While reading tabs and sheet music can be invaluable, being able to play by ear offers a deeper connection to the music and allows for spontaneous creativity.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced guitarist looking to enhance your skills, this guide will provide you with the essential steps to learn to play by ear.

Familiarity

This may seem obvious when talking about learning to play by ear, but it is the truth. The more recognizable the sounds, the less work it takes for you to replicate them. Your familiarity with something begets your ability to replicate it. It is often the reason why students are so quick to learn songs that they are familiar with.

It is easier to teach somebody “Blackbird” to someone who knows what it is and where the song is going. But if you teach the song to a 13-year-old who has never heard of the song or barely listens to the Beatles, then they will struggle with it for a reason.

When you can learn a song fast because of your familiarity with it, that is your ear at work.

Understand Music Theory

While playing by ear is largely about listening and replicating what you hear, having a basic understanding of music theory can greatly aid your learning process. Familiarize yourself with concepts such as scales, intervals, and chord progressions. This knowledge will help you make sense of the music you're hearing and enable you to predict what comes next.

Start Simple

When you're just beginning to learn to play by ear, start with simple songs that have clear melodies and chord progressions. Nursery rhymes, folk tunes, and popular songs with straightforward arrangements are excellent choices for practice. Break the song down into smaller sections and focus on learning one part at a time, gradually building up to the entire piece.

Listen and Repeat

Listening is key to playing by ear, so spend plenty of time immersing yourself in music. Listen to a wide variety of genres and pay attention to the different elements of each song. As you listen, try to replicate what you hear on your guitar. Start by picking out individual notes and chords, then work on playing along with the song in real-time. Don't worry about getting it perfect at first – the more you practice, the better you'll become.

Practice, Practice, Practice

As with any skill, learning to play guitar by ear requires consistent practice and dedication. Set aside time each day to work on your ear training and improvisation skills. Challenge yourself with new songs and techniques, and don't get discouraged if progress feels slow at times. With patience and perseverance, you'll gradually develop your ability to play by ear and unlock a whole new world of musical possibilities.

Conclusion

By training your ears, understanding music theory, and practicing regularly, you'll develop the skills and confidence to play along with your favorite songs and even create your own music from scratch. So pick up your guitar, tune in to your favorite tunes, and let your ears lead the way to musical mastery.
